Abstract
Mg++ ions alleviate the inhibitory effect of vancomycin on Escherichia coli. This is not due to the formation of an antibacterial-inactive complex. It is suggested that vancomycin and Mg++ compete for a receptor site, or sites, on (or in) the bacterial cell.
