Abstracts for the 2024 AMSSM Annual Meeting in Baltimore, MD, are now being accepted. Prospective members interested in presenting or submitting an abstract must join AMSSM before the abstract submission deadlines, rather than waiting until the abstract is accepted. If they apply now, their membership will run through 2024. Please encourage those interested to apply for membership by visiting www.amssm.org/Membership.html.

Apply for AMSSM Foundation Research Grant Awards ($50,000/year)
Deadline—November 3, 2023
The purpose of the AMSSM Foundation Research Grant Award program is to foster original scientific investigations by members of AMSSM. Up to two grants of up to $25,000 each will be awarded. Completed grant applications must be submitted by November 3, 2023. To be eligible, the primary investigator must be an AMSSM member. AMSSM Minority Research Grant Award ($10,000)
Deadline—February 16, 2024
AMSSM is excited to continue its research grant opportunity geared specifically for researchers identifying as underrepresented minorities. The purpose of the AMSSM Minority Research Grant is to provide research opportunities specifically for historically underrepresented minorities in biomedical research to advance representation across diverse backgrounds and promote health equity in sports medicine research. The grant provides $10,000 in funding with a due date of February 16, 2024.

American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM)
In Memoriam: Merv Cross
Knee surgeon Mervyn Cross, MD, MBBS, FRACS and AOSSM 2007 Hall of Fame Inductee, passed away on August 25, 2023, after a long battle with lung disease. He was 82.
Dr Cross treated a wide range of patients in his 40-year career, from celebrities like Jack Nicklaus to underserved communities. He founded or co-founded several renowned institutions including the North Sydney Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Centre, the Stadium Clinic, and the Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Research. Dr Cross’ research was widely published in journals, textbooks, and other outlets the world over. Among his many honors and achievements, he was Director of Orthopaedics for the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 and a Godfather Lecturer to the Herodicus Society in 2021. He and his son Tom, also an orthopaedic surgeon, developed the “Cross Bracing Protocol” to help give athletes a choice to attempt return to play without surgery.
Dr Cross is survived by his wife Virginia and children Joe, Tom, Belinda and John and two grandchildren: Dr Matthew Dowsett and Stephanie Dowsett.
Robert A. Arciero to Deliver the 2024 Kennedy Lecture
Congratulations to Robert A. Arciero, MD, on being named the 2024 AOSSM Kennedy Lecturer. Dr Arciero is a professor and chief of the Sports Medicine Division of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UConn Health. He is also the director of the Orthopedic Sports Medicine Fellowship program and an active team physician for the UConn athletic programs. He serves as an orthopaedic team physician for USA Hockey and was the lead physician for the 2004 World Championship team.
A past president of AOSSM, Dr Arciero has won several national and international awards, including the AOSSM Hall of Fame (2021), Sports Medicine Leadership Award (2018), and Rovere Award (2011).
The lectureship was named in honor of John C. Kennedy, MD, FRCS(C), a past president of AOSSM, in 1985. This lecture is supported by a Kennedy Family Endowment and the American Journal of Sports Medicine and is named by the current AOSSM president.
Dr Arciero will deliver his lecture at Specialty Day, Saturday February 16, 2024, in San Fransisco as part of the AAOS Annual Meeting. AOSSM will partner with American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons (ASES) for a full day of programming. Registration opens October 18, 2023. Learn more at sportsmed.org/events.
