The authors regret having incorrectly described some symptoms of public health emergencies in Fig. 1.

Image 1

Fig. 1. A diagram of public health emergencies caused by environmental pollution. The events caused by air pollution, heavy metal contamination, and chemical poisoning are shaded with yellow, orange, and blue, respectively. The incidents caused by local chemical pollution and occupational exposure are outlined with blue and grey borders, respectively.

The original manuscript describes the symptoms of the Bangladesh event in 1990 as “Kidney stones in infants, acute renal failure”. This should have been “Skin lesions (keratosis, melanoderma) and death”. The original description of “Behavioral abnormalities, developmental malformations, neurological” in Niigata event should have been “Behavioral abnormalities, developmental malformations, neurological diseases”. The original description of “Death and disabled” in Bhopal event should have been “Death and physical disabilities”. The original description of “Neurological, respiratory, reproductive, endocrine, and cancer” in Sichuan event should have been “Neurological, respiratory, reproductive and endocrine diseases, and cancer”. In addition, the original description of “U.S” in West Virginia, Los Angeles and Donora events should have been “U.S.”, and that of “U.K” in London event should have been “U.K.”.

We confirm the discrepancy is restricted to the description of some symptoms in Fig. 1.

We have included in this document the revised version of Fig. 1.

The authors would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused.
