People may burn more calories by abandoning the pretense of “going for a run” and going for a walk at the same speed instead (J Sports Med Phys Fitness 2001;40:297-302). A study of volunteers on treadmills shows that walking a mile at 5miles per hour uses up at least as much energy as jogging a mile atthe same pace. The volunteers were all healthy women who were walkingnormally, not race walking.
