Feline Focus

PMCID: PMC10822467

Cheers!—The Launch of JFMS

JFMS was officially launched at BSAVA Congress on April 9 following the first meeting of the editorial board at the Repertory Theatre in Birmingham.

Editor, Dr Andrew Sparkes, expressed his delight in the publication of a dedicated feline medicine and surgery Journal. ‘The publication of a specialist Journal to include clinical and basic studies was one of EFSM's initial objectives; the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (JFMS) also provides a vehicle to further develop our other aims of serving veterinary practitioners and scientists with an interest in feline medicine, raising awareness among practitioners and promoting continuing education in the field of feline medicine. We are delighted with the quality of the papers in the first issue and the input and experience of the editorial board—such feline expertise has not previously been brought together and will provide an excellent basis for raising standards of feline knowledge’. Dr Sparkes also expressed his thanks to WB Saunders for the care and enthusiasm they have put into the design and production of the Journal.

ESFM Annual General Meeting 1999

Held in Austin Hall, ICC Birmingham 7/4/99

Apologies for absence

Present: 13 in total.

All EC members except Karin Holler (KH).

Minutes from previous AGM

The minutes from the previous meeting were accepted without amendment, and singed by Marian Horzinek (MH).

MH reported that future minutes would still be published in Feline Focus, which would be incorporated into the new JFMS.

Matters arising

There were no matters arising.

Changes to bye-laws

Suggested changes to the bye-laws had been circulated in Feline Focus, and these were accepted unanimously. Andrew Sparkes (AS) was re-elected unopposed as Secretary of ESFM for a further 3 years.

President's report

MH reported that he had continued to enjoy representing the ESFM. He also reported that the EC meetings were sometimes held by teleconference to reduce expense. MH suggested that in the immediate future, organisation of specialist feline meetings and the new journal would be the main focus of ESFM activities. However, he also said that other initiatives would be considered in the future. He speculated on the possibility of the development of a student ESFM body and perhaps an ESFM sponsored lectureship in the future. MH also reported that he would step down as President of ESFM at the next AGM (in the year 2000).

Myra Forster-van Hijfte (MFvH) suggested publishing a list of members (names, addresses, contact numbers) to allow direct contact and organisation of meetings between members. Several others endorsed this idea.

Membership report

Claire Bessant (CB) reported that current membership was in a state of flux as there were changes to the timing of the annual renewal of membership, along with the new membership rates to cover the journal costs. At the end of last year, membership stood at almost 700, and approximately 300 had currently renewed their subscriptions at the new rate. CB reported that others will be contacted directly to renew their subscription at the increased rate.

Treasurer's report

A printed sheet was circulated with figures to end 12/98 showing a balance of £8747 including an interest free loan of £5000 from FAB. CB reported that an official audit of accounts will be undertaken by the FAB accountants.

JFMS report

All present had seen a copy of the first issue of the new JFMS that had just been published Tim Gruffydd-Jones (TJGJ) thanked CB and AS for their work in producing the Journal and commented that the quality of the journal should significantly enhance the reputation of ESFM. AS thanked CB for the work she had put in to ensuring the Journal was a success. Michelle Fermé-Fradin (MFF) suggested an explanation of the figures on the cover would be useful.

Future meetings

TJGJ reported that

  • in 1999; there will be a meeting in Barcelona;

  • in 2000 there will be meetings at BSAVA, WSAVA/FECAVA/Voojarsdagen, Naples, possibly one in Germany and possibly one in Sweden. TJGJ outlined a plan for the future for a 2-day stand-alone ESFM meeting, but said that this had not yet been finalised. He also spoke about the possibility of a meeting in conjunction with ESVIM, and that there were plans for a joint meeting with AAFP at WSAVA 2001 in Vancouver.

MH invited suggestions for the format of future meetings. MFvH suggested more time between or after lectures for discussion might be useful. TJGJ suggested perhaps a session for delegates to present cases for discussion. Raiku Sarvă (RS) suggested a round table discussion at the end of the day. There was a request to try to get printed material from the talks for distribution at or after the ESFM/BSAVA study day. There was agreement that speakers should be asked for a manuscript or printouts from their slides that could be used as a handout at the time of the meeting. A CD-ROM with text and picture slides was another possibility. MH said that these ideas would be looked into. MFF suggested that proceedings could be sold afterwards to people not attending. MFvH suggested that abstracts could be published in JFMS but MH suggested this could be counter-productive for the future impact-factor of the new journal. There was a feeling that the cost of the study this year was very reasonable.

AOB

MH encouraged active participation of ESFM by members and welcomed feedback and suggestions to enable ESFM to meet the needs of the members.

MFvH questioned the role of BoR members. Stefano Romagnoli (SR) outlined that their main function was to keep the ESFM informed of national events relating to feline veterinary events, and also to provide abstracts for Feline Focus from national publications. CB and MH reported that there would be further communication from SR on the role of BoR members and some guidelines for them. SR also reported that there was a proposal to provide BoR members with a £10 discount on ESFM membership rates from 2000.

There being no other business, MH thanked everyone for attending and the meeting was closed.

Nominations for the ESFM Executive Committee

ESFM President Marian Horzinek will stand down at the AGM in April 2000. Nominations for President should be recieved by September 1999 to be published in the December issue. Nominations should be sent to ESFM, Taeselbury, High Street, Tilsbury, Wiltshire SP3 6LD, UK.

JFMS is included as part of membership on the understanding that the Journal is for the member's use only and not passed on to libraries.

About ESFM and FAB

The European Society of Feline Medicine (ESFM) was founded by the Feline Advisory Bureau in 1996 to provide a focus for this growing interest and enthusiasm in feline medicine throughout Europe and to provide a forum for the dissemination of information and current developments. The Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery is the official journal of ESFM and is included as part of the membership package, which also includes reduced rates to ESFM meetings and conferences.

The Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB) is a charity dedicated to the health and welfare of cats. The Bureau was founded in 1958 when knowledge of the cat and its veterinary care was in its infancy. By gathering information and funding veterinary surgeons to specialise in the care of cats, FAB has had a major influence on improvements in veterinary treatment. FAB currently funds a Lecturer in Feline Medicine and a Resident at Bristol Veterinary School as well as a Resident at Edinburgh Veterinary School in the UK. The Bureau also has expertise in a wide range of feline matters including the welfare of cats in boarding and quarantine catteries, improving standards of feline rescue and providing information for breeders and cat owners. Members of FAB receive the FAB Journal quarterly. Joint FAB and ESFM membership is available.

Membership

Membership of ESFM is £55. Joint membership of FAB and ESFM is £70 in the UK and £80 overseas. Practice membership is also available and costs £95 in the UK and £120 overseas. Practice members receive the FAB Journal, JFMS, reduced rates for any members of the practice (veterinary surgeons and nurses) to attend FAB and ESFM Conferences, a complete set of FAB information sheets (around 50), laminated certificate of membership for the waiting room and car stickers. If you have any queries contact ESFM at Taeselbury, High Street, Tisbury, Wiltshire SP3 6LD, UK. Tel: +44 (0)1747 8718772, fax: +44 (0)1747 871873, e-mail: esfm.fab@ukonline.co.uk
