Hong Kong Medical Journal (HKMJ) is the flagship general medical journal in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, China, with an international outlook. We are committed to publishing and promoting high-quality research. Led by our Editor-in-Chief, Professor Martin CS Wong, our Editorial Board is pleased to collaborate with Dr. Chen Wang, the Editor-in-Chief of the Chinese Medical Journal (CMJ), as well as the editors of CMJ to enhance the visibility of our respective journals and foster a collaborate environment that brings forth ideas and knowledge to our readers.
Our journal is the official, peer-reviewed joint publication by the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM) and the Hong Kong Medical Association (HKMA). It is published by the HKAM Press and indexed in MEDLINE/Index Medicus, Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Current Contents–Clinical Medicine, BIOSIS Previews, Embase/Excerpta Medica, Biological Abstracts, Index Copernicus, and SCOPUS. The 2022 Journal Impact Factor for HKMJ is 3.7 (Clarivate, 2023). The 2022 CiteScore for HKMJ is 1.9 (Scopus, 2023). We aim to publish high-quality original articles, review articles, medical practice papers, perspectives, case reports, pictorial medicine papers, editorials, commentaries, and letters to the editor covering a wide range of topics pertaining to the art and science of medicine.
In 2022, we received over 500 submissions. HKMJ attracts numerous submissions from outside Hong Kong, with 64% of submissions being international. The overall acceptance rate was <15% and, thanks to improvements in handling of submissions, the submission-to-acceptance time was reduced by around 20% to 8 weeks and the acceptance-to-print time was approximately 7 months. Recognizing that many authors and readers come from non-native English-speaking backgrounds, HKMJ offers complimentary technical and copy editing services for all accepted papers. This ensures not only the rectification of spelling and grammatical errors, but also the production of clear, concise, and easily readable published papers. We also place a particular emphasis on publishing special sections on global healthcare, focusing on primary care and population health, aiming to promote high-quality research and encourage communication among medical and dental professionals in Hong Kong.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic, we have published numerous articles covering a broad range of topics related to this subject. Our HKMJ team has compiled a repository of these publications, which can be accessed on our website (https://www.hkmj.org/COVID-19). This resource allows our readers to quickly access information and stay informed about potential changes in clinical practice. For instance, we have explored the issue of vaccine hesitancy and the challenges of implementing mass vaccination programs.[1] Furthermore, we have extensively published on COVID-19 from a public health perspective, for example, the proposal of ventilation strategies for school reopening.[2] In addition, we have reported on atypical manifestations of COVID-19, such as cold agglutinin-mediated autoimmune hemolytic anemia.[3] Regarding prognosis, we have reported local data on the clinical course and mortality rate for patients aged 65 years and above.[4] Last but not the least, our articles have also delved into the impact of COVID-19 on specific patient subgroups, including the association between pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome and COVID-19,[5] as well as the knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral changes of pregnant women in relation to the virus.[6]
HKMJ is committed to publishing and promoting high-quality research with an expanding global reach. We are grateful for the opportunity to introduce our journal to the readers of CMJ and are delighted to reciprocate by promoting CMJ among our readers. Happy reading!
