Volume 69, no. 8, p. 5107-5114, 2001: The first author of this article informed the coauthors that he manipulated the final panel of Fig. 2 to provide an image of sufficient quality for publication. The coauthors were unaware of the manipulation. Although his action does not call into question the validity of the results, we prefer to retract the article. In doing so, however, we note that subsequent research over the last 3 years, including two published papers (A. J. Roe, H. Yull, S. W. Naylor, M. J. Woodward, D. G. E. Smith, and D. L. Gally, Infect. Immun. 71:5900-5909, 2003, and A. J. Roe, S. W. Naylor, K. J. Spears, H. M. Yull, T. A. Dransfield, M. Oxford, I. J. Kendrick, M. Porter, M. J. Woodward, D. G. Smith, and D. L. Gally, Mol. Microbiol. 54:337-352, 2004), has validated the original findings of the article, in particular the heterogeneity in EspD and Tir expression demonstrated in Fig. 2.
