The Journal of Periodontal and Implant Science (JPIS) is pleased to announce that we will be publishing volume 54 in 2024. The editorial members of JPIS would like to express their deepest gratitude to all the reviewers for their efforts in bringing JPIS to publication. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has encouraged many researchers to focus more on their research, submit more papers, and review more papers, which in turn helped to improve the quality of JPIS and increase its standing. During the recent transition period from a non-contact to a face-to-face environment after the COVID-19 pandemic, JPIS’s online publication processes—including submission, review, editing, and publication—have all been seamlessly conducted all over the world, thanks to the devotion of our reviewers. JPIS published 6 issues in 2023, with 6 original articles and 1 editorial in each issue, making a total of 36 original articles and 6 editorials being published. The editorial board members worked hard to publish these articles. In 2023, 231 papers were submitted, of which 21 papers were accepted, 187 were rejected, 15 are under review, and 8 have a status of other. In our recent publication metrics, JPIS has demonstrated a consistent contribution to academic discourse, as evidenced by its 2022 impact factor of 1.9. Over a more extended period, the 5-year impact factor has been calculated at 2.3, underscoring the sustained influence of our publications. Additionally, the geographical diversity of our contributors is notable, with corresponding authors from 32 countries worldwide. The average duration from manuscript submission to publication, inclusive of periods allocated for author confirmation following English proofreading and manuscript editing, stands at 166 days, indicating a commitment to maintaining a rigorous yet efficient review process. JPIS offers complimentary English proofreading and manuscript editing services to facilitate the publication process. These services are extended to ensure the highest standards of academic writing and are provided at no additional cost to authors. Final publication decisions are subject to the author’s confirmation, which is an important step in maintaining the integrity and quality of the published work. While these services significantly improve the quality of manuscripts, it is important to note that they may extend the time required to complete the publication process. Therefore, authors should expect a potentially longer turnaround time to accommodate this comprehensive review phase.

Selecting the right reviewers for research papers on a wide range of topics is critical for maintaining the quality of the journal. Editorial board members strive to find these individuals, though it is not an easy task. Furthermore, reviewing a newly submitted manuscript demands considerable effort from researchers who are already engaged in their own demanding work. It is the reviewers' strong sense of responsibility and commitment to their mission that drives them to evaluate the papers and provide valuable feedback to the authors. The entire editorial board fully acknowledges the role and contributions of our reviewers. From this perspective, the Korean Academy of Periodontology (KAP) has instituted the NIBEC-JPIS Best Article Award (since 2020, sponsored by NIBEC, Jincheon, Korea) and the Dentium-JPIS Best Reviewer Award (since 2022, sponsored by Dentium, Suwon, Korea). The “Dentium-JPIS Best Reviewer Award” is a testament to the reviewers’ dedication to the publication of JPIS. In 2023, Prof. Ji-Yeon Hong (Kyung Hee University), Prof. Jae-Hong Lee (Jeonbuk National University), and Prof. Jungwon Lee (Seoul National University Dental Hospital) were the recipients of this award. We extend our heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to them for their outstanding review efforts.

In 2023, JPIS initiated an online workshop designed to facilitate interactions among researchers, reviewers, and editors. This event, which took place on November 28, 2023, aimed to provide researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the article submission process and set clear expectations for manuscript handling. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the reviewers and researchers who engaged in this workshop. While it is not feasible to acknowledge each of our reviewers individually, through this editorial, we wish to convey our profound appreciation for their invaluable contributions and understanding toward JPIS. We are always open to and appreciative of the insightful comments and feedback provided by our reviewers. We would like to express our gratitude once again to all the reviewers who have been instrumental in the success of JPIS. Your efforts are deeply appreciated, and we eagerly anticipate your continued support in the coming year, 2024.
