Risk factors for suprachoroidal haemorrhage during cataract surgery

To the Editor:

I read with interest the Article on Risk factors for suprachoroidal haemorrhage during cataract surgery by S. Stewart et al. [1]. As someone having experienced this complication, I thank them for highlighting the importance of being aware of this rare but catastrophic complication.

There have been reports of some circumstantial evidence of an increased risk of choroidal haemorrhage in women during menstruation [2].

Biochemical changes are known to occur during menstrual cycle including vascular fragility, platelet function and fibrinogen synthesis [3, 4].

Most patients undergoing cataract operations are in the postmenopausal age group, but we do operate on younger patients too. As a precautionary step, it may be advisable and safer not to schedule intraocular surgery during menstruation.
