Progesterone and progestogens are not beneficial in treating premenstrual syndrome

Despite the fact that many women are prescribed progesterone and progestogens for the treatment of the premenstrual syndrome, there seems to be no convincing evidence to show that they work. On p 776 Wyatt and colleagues provide the results of a systematic review of the treatment of this condition, which affects up to 1.5 million women a year in the United Kingdom. From their meta-analysis they found no evidence to support the use of progesterone and insufficient evidence for progestogens. Therefore, it seems that there is no justification for their continued use.
