Vulimiri Ramalingaswami, better known as “Rama,” developed an enduring interest in the nutritional problems of developing countries. The major thrust of his research was in malnutrition and liver disease in the tropics. His deep interest in community oriented research is also reflected in his studies on the Bihar famine and the victims of the Bhopal gas disaster. He was the initiator of research on HIV in India. Recognition and honours came from all over the world and he was an adviser to the Indian government and to many international agencies.
