While at Trinity, he also obtained a BA in English literature. His love of poetry and literature stayed with him throughout his life, culminating, just before his death, in the publication of his book Darkling I Listen, a collection of prose and poetry he had written over the years. Barrie never regained consciousness from an operation to replace a deteriorating pig's aortic valve, which had served him so well for 17 years. He leaves a wife, Jane; and a son.
