The government's national plan for the NHS in Britain may underestimate the numbers of new doctors needed. Only half of the 373 registrars surveyed intended to stay in the health authority where they trained, and many, especially women, were interested in working part time. Bowler and Jackson (p 464) say that the 550 promised new training posts will not be enough to meet the government's plan of 2000 more general practitioners.
