Former general practitioner Welwyn Garden City (b Carlisle 1951; q Cambridge/Middlesex Hospital 1975; MRCGP), d 28 February 2002.
Ian was academically gifted, but just before finals he developed serious thought disturbances and depression, as a result of a schizoaffective disorder that eventually claimed his life. He recovered well enough to qualify and worked in general practice in Welwyn Garden City until 1992, when he had further setbacks and took early retirement. Ian then worked as a locum until he relapsed in November 2001. He had a wicked sense of humour, which never deserted him. He was a keen photographer and collected cameras. He leaves a wife, Jasmine; and two daughters.
