Traffic laws reduce crash deaths

Properly enforced traffic safety laws, such as speed control measures and traffic calming measures, are the most effective way of reducing road deaths. Driver education and training programmes have no effect on crash rates. O'Neill and Mohan (p 1142) say that to reduce the increasing numbers of crash deaths and injuries resulting from the rapid growth in use of motor vehicles, countries need to adopt a broad array of research based measures. These include setting safety standards for the front ends of motor vehicles to make them less hazardous.
