Senior registrar in medical ophthalmology Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge (b 1963; q Manchester 1986; MRCP, FRCOphth), died from linitis plastica on 13 December 2001.
Marie was ready to apply for a consultant post when her life was cut short. A high academic achiever, she was the author of numerous publications and gave prizewinning presentations while putting the final touches to her MD thesis. In her last months, she was able to enjoy the sights of Italy, Spain, and the Lake District. Her dedication to ophthalmology and teaching is honoured posthumously by the Marie Comer Specialist Registrar Prize at Addenbrooke's. She leaves her parents, Luke and Ellen.
