After qualifying in Colombo, Joe practised in Ceylon until 1972. He then emigrated to England, where he trained in surgery and specialised in accident and emergency medicine. He worked as a registrar in Lincoln and Leicester and as a senior registrar in Middlesbrough before taking up his consultant post in Ashton-under-Lyne. Joe was an active member of his local church, where his singing talents and natural leadership were greatly appreciated. He leaves a wife, Sajo; and two children.
