David began medicine in 1946 after a distinguished war record. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1939 and flew spitfires and other single-seater aircraft in Britain, eventually being posted to Burma and the Far East. He flew fighters and then flying boats throughout the second world war. As consultant general physician at Worthing Hospital he helped set up the Worthing/St Thomas's medical registrar rotation—the first official rotation in the region and one of the first in the country. He described a new physical sign in the cardiovascular system—the first new clinical sign since 1920. He leaves a wife, Hilary; three children; and two grandchildren.
