Tom Littler had a special interest in rheumatology. On being appointed to Birkenhead General Hospital he established a specialist rheumatology clinic, but he was not offered any designated beds. However, in 1954 he was offered four beds at a nearby underused sanatorium, which was later transformed into the Liverpool Regional Rheumatology Centre. It provided a comprehensive service, including combined medical and surgical clinics and extensive rehabilitation.
