Former medical director Wellcome (b Pwllheli, north Wales, 1920; q Middlesex Hospital, London, 1944; DPH, MD), died from a ruptured aortic aneurysm on 13 April 2002.
“Griff” was a general practitioner in Oxfordshire before moving to public health in Cardiff. It was after one of his public lectures that Wellcome approached him to consider a career in pharmaceutical medicine. Thus at the age of 44 he became head
of virology and later medical director at Wellcome, where he worked for 26 years. He was a member of the World Health Organization's policy board for vaccination and was instrumental in developing vaccination policy for several countries, including China, where he was one of the few westerners admitted during the Cultural Revolution. He was diagnosed as having Parkinson's disease at the age of 55. Predeceased by his wife, he leaves two daughters and five grandchildren.
