Former consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Hemel Hempstead (b Sri Lanka 1919; q Madras, India, 1948; FRCOG), died on 22 February 2002 following a stroke.
Cyril Pallewela worked in Sri Lanka until 1958, when he came to the United Kingdom and continued in the NHS until retirement in 1986. Through his Sri Lankan contacts, he brought into Hemel Hempstead and St Albans many excellent junior staff members who are now settled in senior positions throughout the world. In 2001 Cyril was made a fellow of the newly formed Sri Lankan College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. After retirement he and his wife, Connie, lived permanently in Sri Lanka but visited the UK most years.
