Ian Bartholomew held junior posts at the Westminster Hospital and at Atkinson Morley's Hospital, London. He displayed a rare talent as a caricaturist and started the tradition of caricaturing guest professors at the students' Shrove Tuesday dinner. His originals still hang in the corridors of the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. After qualifying, he served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve during the second world war and purchased his share as a principal in his Warminster practice in 1946. He retired in 1981. He leaves a wife and four children.
