General and colorectal consultant Royal Infirmary, Edinburgh (b Edinburgh 1938; q Edinburgh 1964; FRCS), died suddenly on 12 August while on a fishing holiday.
After national service in the navy Alasdair MacGregor did his preclinical training in Cambridge. He then moved to Edinburgh and was appointed consultant at the Royal Infirmary and Deaconess Hospital in 1977. Alasdair had an extensive administrative workload and was involved in the development of plans for the new Royal Infirmary. He served for two periods as honorary treasurer of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was a member of the council for 10 years. His knowledge of wine and arboriculture and his skill with a rifle, shotgun, and salmon rod were legendary. He leaves a wife, Elizabeth; a daughter; and three sons.
