Former geriatrician Hastings (b 1920; q Cambridge/Guy's Hospital, London, 1944; CBE, MD, FRCP), died from metastatic rectal cancer on Christmas Day 2002.
Bobby served in the Middle East with the Royal Army Medical Corps and was appointed to Hastings in 1958. He had at first to contend with 300 “chronic sick” beds in four hospitals and treated 600 patients annually with help from one house physician. When he retired in 1985, admissions were 4000 patients a year through some 180 acute beds and the staff had increased to four consultants and nine others. Bobby co-developed the world's first geriatric-orthopaedic unit. Predeceased by his wife, Peggy, he leaves seven children and 16 grandchildren.
