He initially specialised in orthopaedic surgery, later changing to ophthalmology at the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. His published work reflected his wide interest in ophthalmology. In particular, his Middle-more lecture in 1970 provided deep insight into the future performance of vitreoretinal surgery. He cowrote Eyes and Education, which reflected his work as visiting ophthalmologist at the National Children's Home. He was also at the forefront in the early development of ophthalmic ultrasound. A gifted pianist, he was interested in history, cars, and fine wines. He leaves his second wife, Jean; two daughters; and two grandchildren.
