He settled in singlehanded general practice in Blackwell, Derbyshire, in 1946, retiring in 1960. He moved to Eastbourne, continuing with his great interest in cricket and latterly solving crosswords. He died peacefully in Eastbourne District General Hospital after a fall at home. He leaves a wife, Margaret (Peggy), and a daughter, Elizabeth.
