Leader Dominic Stirling arrived in what was then Tanganyika in 1935 as a medical missionary. His final move was to the slopes of Kilimanjaro, where he supervised the building of yet another hospital. He was an MP from before independence in 1961 until 1983, and at the age of 70 he became Tanzania's minister of health for six years. He leaves his second wife, Annah Chisonga.
