Following two years in the Royal Air Force and jobs in Manchester and London, Nelson Montgomery became the longest serving resident assistant physician at Great Ormond Street. A Fulbright scholarship took him to the Boston Children's Hospital, and then he returned to St Mary's as a senior registrar. Monty boasted that he obtained his consultant post without a single publication to his name, but he was an excellent teacher of the young senior house officers, and he exchanged extra tuition for the diploma in child health for digging in his vegetable patch. He retired in 1983. He leaves a wife, Bridget; three children; and a grandson.
