Former consultant in children's psychiatry and medical director Coventry Child Guidance Service (b Coventry 1919; q Birmingham 1953; DPM, MRCPsych), d 19 April 2003.

On leaving school Jim studied ophthalmic optics. Shortly after the outbreak of the second world war, he was conscripted to the forces, joining the Royal Army Ordnance Corps and Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. He received a shrapnel wound during an air raid on Singapore. While he was recovering in military hospital, Singapore fell to the Japanese and he became a prisoner of war in Singapore and later in Japan. After demobilisation he studied medicine and in 1962 he became a consultant in children's psychiatry in Coventry, a post he held for 18 years. He had a particular interest in family therapy based on systems theory. He leaves a wife, Amy; four children; and seven grandchildren.
