Abstract

Seeking the best care for your patients: interreference between NDs and MDs

Thank you for your well-presented and timely material. Reading Medscape has been an easy and effective way to stay abreast of some of the latest research presentations. In a recent article,[1] the quality of my education was stated to be inferior. As a naturopathic physician who has done rotations at major medical centers in the United States, I must respectfully disagree. During my rotations, I was never in a position where I knew less then my MD student colleagues; in fact, I often knew more based on our differing class schedules. I am a naturopathic physician who graduated from Bastyr University, a university whose thorough basis in research-driven medicine has been recognized by the NIH, the White House, and the top medical universities in this country. Your writer did a less than thorough job in his/her research and has unfortunately painted an inaccurate picture of my training and profession. As I seek the best care for my patients, I often inter-refer with MDs in my area. An article like this can only have negative repercussions for the quality of patient care. This, I believe, is the true shame of this article. We are all doctors whose primary goal is the health and well-being of our patients. Nothing should be allowed to interfere with the quality of that care.
