This article has been retracted: please see Elsevier Policy on Article Withdrawal (https://www.elsevier.com/about/policies/article-withdrawal).

This article has been retracted following review of the available information by the Editor-in-Chief.

Concerns were raised in a Letter to the Editor on the paper regarding confusion regarding bioactives naturally found in human milk vs those formulated specifically for use in infant formula. The authors agreed that there had been a linguistic misunderstanding and that the original article was incorrect in categorizing these bioactives. An Expression of Concern was appended to the paper whilst the authors were given a chance to write a revised version of their original article.

Subsequent evaluation of a revised paper has concluded that it does not advance our understanding of the topic. The changes needed were judged to exceed the threshold that could be corrected via a Corrigendum and therefore necessitated retraction.

This retraction supersedes the Expression of Concern.

As a consequence of the above, the scientific trustworthiness of the original article cannot be established; however, intentional wrongdoing should not be inferred.
