Jennifer Brown, the daughter of Chancellor Gordon Brown and his wife, Sarah, died on Monday in the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, 10 days after her birth, which was seven weeks premature.
Jennifer was delivered by caesarean section on 28 December at the Forth Park Hospital, Kirkcaldy, after doctors discovered that she had intrauterine growth retardation, a condition that occurs in about 10% of pregnancies. She weighed 2 lb 4 oz (just over 1 kg), about half of what would have been expected at 33 weeks' gestation.
A week later, she experienced a cerebral haemorrhage and was transferred to the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion, part of the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. She survived for another three days but died in her parents' arms at 5 20 pm on Monday.
