Dr Richard Smith, editor of the BMJ, last week resigned from his position as professor of medical journalism at the University of Nottingham.
His resignation follows the acceptance by the university of £3.8m ($5.3m) from British American Tobacco (BAT) to fund an international centre for the study of corporate responsibility, and a poll of BMJ readers on the issue.
Readers were asked two questions: whether Nottingham University should return the money to BAT and whether Dr Smith should resign as professor of medical journalism if it did not.
An overwhelming majority (84%) voted in favour of the university returning the money and a small majority (54%) voted in favour of resignation after a refusal. The poll took place during 4-10 May, and 1075 people responded.
A full copy of the resignation letter is on the BMJ's website (bmj.com).
