NHS modernisation teams announced

The health secretary has announced some of the members of the modernisation teams which will carry forward the five challenges for the NHS set out by the prime minister last week.

There will be six teams, each tackling a different area.

The partnership team includes John Hutton, minister of state, Department of Health (chairman); Christine Hancock, general secretary, Royal College of Nursing; Dr Ian Bogle, chairman, BMA council; Jo Williams, president, Association of Directors of Social Services; and Gavin Larner, strategy unit, Department of Health.

The performance and productivity team includes Yvette Cooper, parliamentary undersecretary of state for public health, Department of Health (chairwoman); Stephen Thornton, chief executive, NHS Confederation; Professor Mike Pringle, chairman of council, Royal College of General Practitioners; Professor Don Berwick, head of healthcare policy, Harvard Medical School; Professor Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer for England; and Richard Murray, strategy unit, Department of Health.

The patient care (empowerment) team includes Gisela Stuart, parliamentary undersecretary of state for health, Department of Health (chairwoman); Sarah Mullally, chief nursing officer; Melinda Letts, chairwoman, Long Term Medical Conditions Alliance; Karlene Davis, general secretary, Royal College of Midwives; and Jo Lenaghan, strategy unit, Department of Health.

The patient care (speed of access) team includes Lord Hunt, parliamentary undersecretary of state, Department of Health (chairman); Mr Barry Jackson, president, Royal College of Surgeons; Lord Newton, chairman, North East Essex Mental Health NHS Trust; and Professor Chris Ham, strategy unit, Department of Health.

The professions (workforce) team includes John Denham, minister of state for health, Department of Health (chairman); Professor George Alberti, president, Royal College of Physicians; Bob Abberley, head of health, Unison; Professor Jill Macleod-Clark, professor of nursing, University of Southampton; Nick Ross, broadcaster; and Professor John Van Reenen, strategy unit, Department of Health.

The prevention and inequalities team includes Professor Liam Donaldson, chief medical officer for England (chairman); Rabbi Julia Neuberger, chief executive, King's Fund; Mr James Johnson, chairman, Joint Consultants Committee; Professor Michael Marmot, professor of epidemiology and public health, University College London; and Dr Nick Hicks, strategy unit, Department of Health.

Additional members, including clinicians and managers who have been at the forefront of modernisation in their hospital or health community, will be announced later.
