This article has been retracted at the request of the editor-in-chief. A reader communicated concerns to the editorial office. These concerns are also echoed in a Pubpeer thread (https://pubpeer.com/publications/754A4E9260F032E9D75858B51EE58F), where readers drew attention to similarities within images in this article as well as between images in this article and an article published in Cell Death and Disease (Li et al., 2020, Cell Death Dis. 11, 163, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41419-020-2355-x). Image analysis performed by the editorial office revealed evidence of image duplication in Figures 1I, 2H, 2I, 4F, 5B, 6C, S1A, and S1B. This reuse of data without appropriate attribution represents a severe abuse of the scientific publishing system. None of the authors explicitly agreed or disagreed when notified of the decision to retract.
