New year greetings from the Editor-in-Chief of the Asia–Pacific Journal of Oncology Nursing

Winnie KW So 1
PMCID: PMC11928811

As we step into 2025, I am delighted to share some achievements of the Asia–Pacific Journal of Oncology Nursing (APJON) over the past year and our aspirations for the future. On behalf of our Associate Editors, Linda Krebs and Tateaki Naito, I, Winnie K. W. So, express my deepest gratitude to all authors, reviewers, and readers for their unwavering support and contributions.

Celebrating a decade of excellence

The year 2024 marked the 10th anniversary of APJON. To commemorate this milestone, we published a special issue featuring cutting-edge research and reflecting on the journal's journey since its inception in 2014. We also presented the APJON 10th Anniversary Distinguished Editorial Board Member Awards to honor the extraordinary contributions of our editorial board members.

Our heartfelt thanks to the following board members for recording interviews to celebrate this milestone:

  • Professor Kuei-Ru Chou, Taiwan Medical University College of Nursing

  • Professor Yuhan Lu, Peking University Cancer Hospital

  • Professor Maryam Rassouli, Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences

  • Professor Jun-E Zhang, Sun Yat-sen University School of Nursing

Sadly, 2024 marked a significant loss for us. Our founding Editor-in-Chief, Judith (Judi) Johnson, passed away on April 20, 2024. To honor her remarkable legacy, we established the Judith (Judi) Johnson Best Paper Award. The 2024 award was presented to Niu Niu, Ruirui Huang, Junwen Zhao, and Yingchun Zeng for their exceptional paper titled "Health Benefits of Yoga for Cancer Survivors: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis."

2024 Achievements

  • Significant Growth in Submissions: Manuscript submissions in 2024 increased by 50% compared to 2023, with an acceptance rate of 24%.

  • Enhanced Publication Efficiency: Median times for initial review, peer review, and final decision were 1 day, 21 days, and 62 days, respectively. Accepted articles were published online within 7 days.

  • Increased Full-Text Usage: Full-text downloads exceeded 450,000 in 2024, marking a 12.5% increase compared to 2023.

  • Strengthened Scholarly Impact: Our 2023 impact factor rose to 2.4, CiteScore improved to 2.8, and the 2024 CiteScoreTracker further advanced to 3.6.

Looking ahead to 2025

In the coming year, APJON will continue to strive for excellence by:

  • Adopting Article-Based Publishing (ABP): This approach allows for faster dissemination of research by building journal issues in real time. Papers will be added to the current issue as soon as author proofs are received and approved by the Editors, at which point they will be assigned their final "version of record" publication volume and issue reference. The inaugural issue under the ABP model, Volume 12, Issue 1, is now available on the journal website.

  • Expanding the Editorial Board: We aim to increase regional and disciplinary diversity to reflect a broader range of expertise and perspectives.

  • Enhancing Peer Review: Distinguished researchers from around the globe will be invited to contribute to our peer review process, ensuring the highest standards of academic rigor.

  • Strengthening Outreach and Engagement: We will continue to grow our presence and connect with readers through platforms such as WeChat, LinkedIn, X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook.

  • Advancing special issues: Topics will include breast radiation dermatitis, cardio-oncology nursing, and addressing the needs of older adults with cancer and their caregivers.

  • Seventh Asian Oncology Nursing Society Conference: This flagship event will be held in November 2025 in the Philippines, and we warmly encourage your participation.

Thank you for your invaluable support in 2024. I wish you a successful and fulfilling 2025, and I look forward to achieving new milestones together in the year ahead!
