We are issuing a correction to clarify the mechanistic interpretation of iron oxide (Fe2O3) formation from Madhuca indica extract in our published article (DOI: 10.1021/acsomega.3c02744). It has come to our attention that the role of polyphenols in the oxidation process requires further elaboration. Polyphenols such as catechins, gallic acid, and quercetin that are primarily known for their antioxidant properties exhibit pro-oxidant behavior under certain conditions and participate in redox cycling with Fe2+ and promoting its oxidation to Fe3+. Moreover, there is a trifluoromethyl (−CF3) group attached to the iron center instead of carbonyl, which indicates potential ligand coordination effects that can impact the oxidation state and reactivity of iron species. However, further experimental studies including ROS detection and iron speciation analysis are necessary to validate this proposed mechanism. The authors apologize for any misunderstanding this may have caused.
