Gland Surgery is launching a new regular feature in each issue entitled “Breast Surgery Worldwide”. The aim of this series is to showcase the status of Breast Surgery around the world in its broadest sense. Thus, breast surgery is subdivided into three entities: oncologic breast surgery, oncoplastic breast surgery and reconstructive breast surgery.
The field of breast surgery is constantly developing, and new advances are made almost every day. Although the basic concepts may be similar, the approaches to breast surgery varies between regions and countries. Breast surgery and treatment of diseases and conditions related to the breast is often a multidisciplinary approach based on a multidisciplinary team decision striving to optimize and improve treatment outcomes for the benefit of our patients.
“Breast Surgery Worldwide” aims to give readers an ongoing update of the status and perspectives of breast surgery within the three entities oncologic breast surgery, oncoplastic breast surgery and reconstructive breast surgery. The purpose is also to facilitate international mutual inspiration in clinical practice as well as in clinical research, favoring higher-evidence studies, thus implementing the positive results from one part of the world in the remainder of the breast, plastic and reconstructive community.
Readers may gain knowledge about the best practices from around the world, benchmark their own work, gain inspiration for clinical practice as well as research, and the series may pave the way for clinical collaboration, multicenter trials, fellow-ships, visits and training abroad.
The Guest Editors for the “Breast Surgery Worldwide” series are Professor C. Andrew Salzberg and Professor Jørn Bo Thomsen, and Professor Tine Engberg Damsgaard. Tine Engberg Damsgaard is professor and consultant plastic surgeon at Odense University Hospital and University Hospital of Southern Denmark, Odense and Vejle, Denmark. C. Andrew Salzberg is professor at the Ichan School of Medicine, New York, and consultant plastic surgeon at Cleveland Clinic Florida, Vero Beach, Florida, USA. Dr. Jørn Bo Thomsen is Honorary-Editor-in-Chief for Gland Surgery, professor and consultant plastic surgeon at Odense University Hospital, Odense, Denmark. Each article in this series will focus on a region or a country and will be authored by a breast or plastic surgeon recognized as a leader in the specialty.
