Gerard Debrun, one of the “Grandfathers” of neurointervention, passed away peacefully in November 2023 at his home in Brittany, France, at 94 years of age, according to his daughter Agnes Debrun-Gadbois.
Debrun was born in Paris on March 4, 1929, son of a professional violinist father and a doting mother as an only child. He was an avid chess and tennis player his whole life, the latter he played well into his eighties. He played the piano into his nineties. His military service followed medical school and was completed in Algeria during the war.
Debrun became a neuroradiologist practicing at the Hôpital Henri Mondor in Créteil, a suburban site of the University of Paris. The remarkable 1974 report in the Journal of Neurosurgery of Serbinenko1 from Moscow of a detachable balloon for the intracranial treatment of vascular lesions, first published in English shook the international neurovascular world. It did not include the technical details. Debrun immediately accepted the challenge to reproduce a similar device and created his latex detachable balloons.2

In 1978, Debrun joined the Neurovascular Center at the University Hospital, London, Ontario, Canada. It was commonly presumed that the renowned vascular neurosurgeon Charles Drake3 recruited him, yet the back story differed. Irvin Kricheff of New York University4 claimed the role of matchmaker. Kricheff knew of the impending retirement of John Allcock,5 a longtime London, Ontario, neuroradiologist colleague of Drake. Allcock was pivotal in enlightening Drake about the importance, among other things, of the vasospasm syndrome after SAH and in conceiving of the Drake tourniquet occlusion of the basilar artery for giant basilar aneurysms.
Debrun’s accomplishments during his 3 years in London were expansive for neurointerventional practice, research, and teaching at the University of Western Ontario. There were also other sites of neurointerventional excellence and other Grandfathers at the time. However, with Drake’s focus, London, Ontario, was prominent as a world neurovascular center. The international practice of patients coming to London was busy, mainly due to Drake, many with complex aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations of the brain and spine, and arteriovenous fistulas who came for Debrun for treatment. New developments and training (including Allan J. Fox, a staff neuroradiologist trained by Kricheff, who already practiced with older interventional techniques, and Fernando Viñuela, a resident and then fellow who joined the faculty team) were inspired.
Debrun was already a leader of a small group of international neurointerventional pioneers who started yearly meetings in Park City, Utah, around 1981 and then changed to meeting each January in Val d’Isère, France. These meetings evolved to found the World Federation of Interventional and Therapeutic Neuroradiology in 1990.
By the time Debrun moved to Massachusetts General Hospital in 1981, the London neuroradiologists had a heightened momentum that flourished with innovations, basic research, training, and clinical care. Subsequently, Viñuela moved to the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1986, forming a renowned school of practice, training, and development that created the platinum detachable coils for aneurysm treatment and other applications. The coils remain a pillar of interventional therapy today. Debrun as a Grandfather of Interventional Neuroradiology produced Viñuela as a “Father.”
During the subsequent years, Debrun joined the neurointerventional sections of Harvard, Johns Hopkins, and the University of Illinois, Chicago.6 At each site, he continued to advance neurointerventional research, teaching, and state-of-the-art clinical practice. He was an extraordinary resource for all in those locations and the neurointerventional community. For countless individuals, he provided training and was a role model. He is missed.
Debrun is survived by 5 children who live in Canada, France, and the United States, as well as 11 grandchildren. His grandchildren considered him a sweet, loving, patient, and cute grandpa. They adored him and spent most of their summers in his beautiful Brittany home overlooking the sea cliffs. He had a life well-lived.
Debrun was pivotal in introducing his detachable balloon into clinical practice to North America through his many presentations and reports and his use of it. He also moved to advance other neurointerventional techniques for the gamut of appropriate neurovascular lesions. He worked with and trained many now in various locations, with numerous experts practicing as his legacy today.
