Post-publication, an investigation conducted on behalf of the journal by Elsevier's Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics team identified a concern around the authenticity of the following figures/image panels:
-
I.
Figure 8 and 9 Western blot images appear to show visual indicators of possible duplication and/or splice events.
-
II.
Figure 7 Panel A (MCF-7): Images of Genistein 10 M and Genistein 50 M share an overlapping region indicating that they depict the same source image, but are described as representing different experimental samples.
-
III.
Figure 7 Panel A (MCF-7): Images of 1,25(OH)2D3 (25 M) and genistein+1,25(OH)2D3 2 (25 M) share an overlapping region indicating that they depict the same source image, but are described as representing different experimental samples.
-
IV.
Figure 7 Panel B (MDA-MB231): Images of Genistein 25 M and 1,25(OH)2D3 Control share an overlapping region indicating that they depict the same source image, but are described as representing different experimental samples.
The authors were requested to provide comment on these concerns, as well as the original unprocessed image files to aid investigation. It was felt that the explanation provided was unsatisfactory in resolving these concerns. The Editor has determined that the findings of the article cannot be relied upon, and has decided to retract the article.
The authors disagree with retraction and dispute the grounds for it.
