Correction for Lee, The effects of social media criticism against public health institutions on trust, emotions, and social media engagement

PMCID: PMC12718321  PMID: 41370349

Correction for “The effects of social media criticism against public health institutions on trust, emotions, and social media engagement,” by Jonathan Y. Lee, which published June 25, 2025; 10.1073/pnas.2422890122 (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U.S.A. 122, e2422890122).

The author notes that, in the SI Appendix, page 345 (lines 505-506), “Thus, to evaluate potential effects on the amount of engagement, the Absolute Value of Social Media Engagement Preferences Indices was also included for analysis, as effects on that measure represent shifts towards stronger or weaker engagement preferences (irrespective of the polarity of those preferences)—and it is has been shown that the strength of reported social media engagement preferences correlate with real-world amounts of social media engagement [5, 6].” should instead appear as, “Thus, to evaluate potential effects on the amount of engagement, the Absolute Value of Social Media Engagement Preferences Indices [Abs(Downvote vs. Upvote measure) + Abs(Flag vs. Share measure) + Abs(Block vs. Follow measure)] was also included for analysis, as effects on that measure represent shifts towards stronger or weaker engagement preferences (irrespective of the polarity of those preferences)—and it is has been shown that the strength of reported social media engagement preferences correlate with real-world amounts of social media engagement [5, 6].”

In addition, in the SI Appendix, page 346 (lines 547-549), “As a measure of the strength of engagement preferences, the Absolute value of social media engagement preferences indices were also analyzed by simply taking the absolute value of each social media engagement preferences index value.” should instead appear as, “As a measure of the strength of engagement preferences, the Absolute value of social media engagement preferences indices were created by taking the absolute value of each social media engagement preference measure and adding them together [Abs(Downvote vs. Upvote measure) + Abs(Flag vs. Share measure) + Abs(Block vs. Follow measure)].”

The SI Appendix has been corrected online.
