Building Bridges: a diversity experiential training

Addressing diversity in medicine is one of the most pressing challenges in reducing health disparities, as evidenced by the poorer health outcomes among marginalized populations. There is a clear and urgent need to integrate a diversity-responsive approach into medical curricula. At the University of Antwerp, we offer an experiential training program within the medical school that emphasizes self-awareness and reflexivity through small-group learning.

Central to this training are three visual reflection tools—the Kaleidoscope, the Iceberg, and the Communication Compass—which guide students in developing a nuanced understanding of patient diversity (Ang et all., 2023). This hands-on training is designed to foster reflective practice and to challenge learners to engage with complex social dynamics in healthcare.

While the visual tools provide a valuable framework for broadening perspectives, the success of the training hinges on creating a safe enough environment for open discussion, addressing tensions, and amplifying diverse voices. Time for discussion, small group settings, faculty development, and ongoing educator reflection are essential components in building effective, diversity-responsive medical education.
