Abstract
JCHIMP's Editor-in-Chief and a member of the Editorial Board acknowledge the importance of authors and peer reviewers to the success of JCHIMP in 2024. They discuss the value of peer review and how it satisfies ACGME directives for scholarship. Publication costs, and sources for publication funding are also examined.
Keywords: Peer review, ACGME scholarly activity, Cost of publications
In this anniversary issue we reserve an article to acknowledge our many contributing authors and peer reviewers. Peer review, especially, remains an often time unacknowledged activity, that is necessary and vital to the performance of any medical journal.
Peer review can contribute to the development of scholarly practices and can be easily documented. This is important because insufficient scholarly activity has been and continues to be a frequent cause of program citation by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). At the 2025 meeting of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine conference (AIMW) in New Orleans, they highlighted that the top ACGME citation received by new programs (<5 years old) is insufficient scholarly activity.
Both peer reviewing and the publication of articles provide strong documentation of scholarship and help to prevent citations during review. ACGME program requirements list numerous examples of how the above activities can contribute to scholarly activities (Fig. 1) to help meet their criteria.1,2 Despite this, peer reviewing is often overlooked as an important contributing activity to demonstrate scholarly activity. Publication of case reports and review articles are also important activities to consider in this regard. Publication should generally be in a journal recognized by the National Library of Medicine, documented by the receipt of a PubMed ID as we are at JCHIMP.3 At the AIMW conference, many other good ideas for demonstrating scholarly activity were discussed. These include: creating an institutional research day, partnering with neighboring programs for a regional research day, and encouraging the participation of residents in the state chapter of the American College of Physicians.
Fig. 1.
Journal-related activities that can be used to demonstrate scholarly activity requirements.1
Peer review activities benefit residents and faculty by encouraging evidence-based, literature-oriented discussions that facilitate an environment of inquiry. And, peer reviewing is ideal for busy physicians because it allows flexible time management. Most journals utilize automated net-based applications to disseminate articles for review. Reviewers have an option to accept or reject the offered review, based on whether their interest or schedule permits. Once the reviewer accepts the article for review, there is an allowed period of about 2 weeks to complete it. Editors rely on physician peer reviewing as a necessary component of the publication process. It helps to ensure quality and provides constructive feedback to authors. Knowledge and training for peer review can be had via published articles and online training.4–6
The preparation of case reports and review articles for publication is a time-honored method of demonstrating clinical excellence. It can foster a mentor relationship as the resident is often assisted and guided by experienced faculty. Cost of publication is certainly a concern for authors and institutions. A 2023 review of a selection of medical journals documented none below $550.7 Although creative sources for obtaining funding can be explored, many educational programs struggle to get funding allocated to publications fees. Yet many authors decide to pay the cost of publication. When there are several co-authors, the individual cost may be reduced to less than $200. Publication may be that extra something that becomes a factor in being selected for a desired subspecialty fellowship. Consistent with a universal impulse to document achievement through publication, a review of JCHIMP statistics demonstrates that published papers arise from a wide variety of institutions as demonstrated in Table 1.

JCHIMP's popularity continues to grow. In the past year, we have seen more than 40,000 downloads in the United States of America, and more than 1000 downloads, each, originating from every one of the other major continents, as demonstrated in Fig. 2. JCHIMP is a growing global publication and we are proud of its performance and development.
