Mary decided at the age of 5 that she wanted to become a doctor. To realise her ambition, she had to persuade her headmistress to allow her to attend the local boys' school to study sciences, which were not taught at the girls' school. In 1954 she applied for and was awarded, out of 107 applicants, a practice in King's Norton by the Medical Practices Committee, becoming the first woman to be awarded an NHS practice in this way. Homoeopathy was an abiding interest for her. Predeceased by a son, she leaves a husband, Stephen; six children; and 15 grandchildren.
