Abstract

Haunted by the suffering and human devastation he witnessed after the 1859 Battle of Solferino in Italy, Swiss banker Henry Dunant wrote a book that galvanized European governments and resulted in the first international agreement that established rules for the conduct of war. The Geneva Convention also resulted in the formation of the Red Cross.
