Correction to “Geographical and Spatial Disparities in the Incidence and Survival of Rare Cancers in Australia”

PMCID: PMC13397141  PMID: 42290545

Dasgupta P., Cameron J. K., Cramb S., et al., “Geographical and Spatial Disparities in the Incidence and Survival of Rare Cancers in Australia,” International Journal of Cancer 152, no. 8 (2022): 1601–1612, 10.1002/ijc.34395.

In the article by Dasgupta et al. (2022), the authors noticed an error in the Abstract and Methods section describing the cohort used for the analysis, in which the exclusion of Australians aged 100 years and over was not correctly described.

The Abstract of the published paper stated, “We describe spatial and geographical patterns in incidence and survival of rare cancers across Australia using a population‐based cancer registry cohort of rare cancer cases diagnosed among Australians aged at least 15 years, 2007–2016.” The correct sentence should be “We describe spatial and geographical patterns in incidence and survival of rare cancers across Australia using a population‐based cancer registry cohort of rare cancer cases diagnosed among Australians aged 15 to 99 years, 2007–2016.”

In the Methods (Study data, 3rd paragraph) in the published paper, the following sentence “All analyses were restricted to persons aged at least 15 years at diagnosis and for survival analysis were further limited to those aged between 15 and 89 years” was incorrect. The correct description is “All analyses were restricted to persons aged 15 to 99 years at diagnosis and for survival analysis were further limited to those aged between 15 and 89 years”.

There were an additional 100 incident cases of rare cancers diagnosed among Australians aged over 99 years during the study period. Inclusion of these cases would have increased the study cohort by 0.04%. Re‐running the analyses with these additional cases included made no difference to the spatial patterns reported in the published paper.

We apologize for this error
