Post-publication, an investigation conducted on behalf of the journal by Elseviers Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics team discovered the following concerns with the article.
-Figure 5B Panels CDDP and Lv-NC+CDDP appear to share an overlapping region indicating that they depict the same source image but are described as representing different experimental samples.
-Figure 2D from the current article and Figure 5C from the article published in Cell Death and Disease 8, e3037 (2017) https://doi.org/10.1038/cddis.2017.394, which was authored by a different group of researchers and which was available online prior to the current article having been submitted to Heliyon appear to share an overlapping region indicating that they depict the same source image, but are described as representing different experimental samples.
Moreover, the study used HOP-92 cell line for small cell lung carcinoma studies whereas the line is reported to be non-small cell lung carcinoma.
The authors were requested to provide comment on these concerns, as well as the original unprocessed image files to aid investigation. It was felt that the explanation provided were unsatisfactory in resolving these concerns.
The Editor has determined that the findings of the article cannot be relied upon, and has decided to retract the article.
The authors disagree with retraction and dispute the grounds for it.
