Following publication, concerns were raised regarding the authenticity/integrity of several immunohistochemical and dihydroethidium staining images in Figs. 3 and 4. A corrigendum was issued in 2019 (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.redox.2019.101276) to address image duplications in Fig. 3E (panels a and d) and Fig. 4K (panels j and k).
Subsequent post-publication review identified further concerns not resolved by that corrigendum:
-
•
Fig. 4K, panels i and l: regions of image overlap between immunohistochemical staining images reported to represent different experimental conditions (anti-p66Shc antibody/Control and anti-p66Shc antibody/STZ + Probucol). This concern was not addressed in the 2019 corrigendum.
The authors were invited to comment on these concerns and attributed Fig. 4K (i, l) overlap to the same inadvertent slide-handling and file-naming error addressed in the 2019 corrigendum, providing raw image data and repeated immunohistochemistry for the affected panels. After reviewing this response, the Editors concluded that the explanation does not sufficiently resolve the outstanding concerns regarding the identified image anomalies identified across Figs. 3 and 4, and that the reliability of the data underlying the article's conclusions can no longer be assured. The 2019 corrigendum is superseded by this retraction.
The Editors consider retraction to be the appropriate corrective action in accordance with COPE guidelines. The Editors apologise to readers of Redox Biology that these issues were not identified prior to publication.
