2005 Health in Foreign Policy Forum Renaissance Washington, DC Hotel February 4 http://www.academyhealth.org/nhpc/affiliateforeignpolicy.htm
While the domestic health policy and the foreign policy communities have had little interaction in the past, globalization in the post cold-war era has brought to light the important nexus and need for dialogue between the two communities. To address this need, AcademyHealth will hold its first “Health in Foreign Policy Forum” on February 4, 2005. Topics to be addressed include:
Health Care and Free Trade Agreements. The health policy implications of international adherence to intellectual property rights, the use of free trade agreements to improve the access of U.S. health care and pharmaceutical industries to foreign markets, drug re-importation and the exchange of genetically modified foods, are but a few of the issues generating debate.
Disease and National Security. The increased threat of bioterrorism and the spread of infectious diseases such as SARS have highlighted the need for international regulations to ensure global security.
Health and International Development. The expansion of the number and types of actors engaged in international humanitarian and development aid, including the expanded role of the military, foundations and NGOs, and a series of new international initiatives has resulted in a shift in the organization and allocation of development funds.
