Two serious errors occurred in Carl Gray's review of Margaret Lock's book Twice Dead: Organ Transplants and the Reinvention of Death (8 June, p 1401). Dr Gray referred to a BBC Panorama programme (“Are transplant donors really dead?”) as a “farrago of inaccuracy,” saying that following the programme, “organ donation was reduced for a decade owing to change in public sentiment.” Neither of these statements is true, as Dr Gray has since admitted. The reporter responsible for that programme, Richard Lindley, has pointed out that the figures for organ donation in the United Kingdom in fact showed a continued increase over the 1980s. Both the BMJ and Dr Gray apologise to Mr Lindley for these errors.
